The Crows Came Back

When you texted me you were happy:
The crows came back, I heard them speak.
I was afraid to write it down.

Every letter is a spike in a railroad tie,
pinning the path down to the picture.
But if a poem had the power

to make this picture stay where it lies,
why do I keep looking back,
waiting for the words to come?
